Workshop Description
Assistive Technology includes a range of tools that can be used to help students with learning disabilities circumvent areas of weakness and access the regular curriculum. However, Assistive Technology is not a miracle cure. As the saying goes, one needs the right tool for the job, and one needs to learn how to use that tool effectively.
After years of working with students, parents, and educators, and as a user of the technology himself, Todd Cunningham has encountered the barriers that exist when using Assistive Technology. One of the primary challenges is the selection of the right Assistive Technology for the student. In addition to demonstrating a range of Assistive Technology, a method for matching these tools to the unique learning profiles of students will be taught. This method of matching the learning needs of students with the technology takes into consideration the characteristics of the learning environment and the objectives of the curriculum.
A variety of learning strategies that support the effective use of Assistive Technology for academic purposes will be demonstrated and linked to specific technologies. Time will be provided for participants to share their own experiences and challenges with Assistive Technology, and for a question and answer period.
This workshop will be of interest to parents, students, educators, and other professionals who work with students with learning disabilities.
